Joan Duru finishes the 2021 Surf City El Salvador ISA World Surfing Games with the gold medal glory, leading team France to the coveted top spot of the event.
The European Surfing Federation is very proud to congratulate France on winning this year's ISA World Surfing Games as well as Joan Duru as the new ISA World Champion. Of course further congratulations have to go out to all our member teams after an intense week of surfing with incredible performances on display. The first ever Olympic surfers were chosen and we are very happy to have quite a few among our member nations to root for!
In the men category the last heat of the event would decide the team trophy still in dispute between Japan and France, with both countries having two surfers in the final. As Japan lead the team points ranking it would require outstanding performances by Joan Duru and Jeremy Flores to bring home the gold. And so they did. Joan grabbed the lead with his first two waves and never let go. Jeremy secured the bronze medal. Enough to beat Japan by a mere 145 points.
“I am so stoked I can’t believe it yet,” said Duru. “I did not expect to do this well at all. I’ve been at home for over a year. I lost sponsors. Then this contest came up so I just got back into training four weeks ago. I can’t believe I won.”
Portugal's Yolanda Sequeira and Teresa Bonvalot arrived into the women's final without ever stepping foot in a repechage round, accomplished with some very solid performances along the way. Unfortunately for our European contenders the Australian born Sally Fitzgibbons had a strong plan of her own she executed down to the T. Two solid waves to start with and expert management of priorities secured Sally a gold medal. Yolanda finished grabbing silver and Teresa bronze. Both their performances lead team Portugal to the Bronze medal, an amazing result.
A final congratulations to all our member surfers who qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. French Michel Bourez, Jeremy Flores, Johanne Defay and Pauline Ado. Portuguese Frederico Morais, Yolanda Sequeira and Teresa Bonvalot. Israel's Anat Leilor. Ramzi Boukhiam from Morocco. And finally the surprise high flying German Leon Glatzer as we can't help highlighting those amazing aerials!
