Seven days of fierce and healthy competition took place at Mirante Beach in Santa Cruz, Portugal. Europe's finest junior surfers displayed their skills and left no wave unshred.
Day One
Competition starts at a good rhythm in Santa Cruz
The Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018 started today at Mirante Beach, in Santa Cruz, with three foot waves. The contest that brings together the top 17 nations of European junior surfing, was put on today, with the first two rounds of the under-16, under-18 and under-18 girls Bodyboarding categories as well as the first two rounds of the under-18 Longboard category.
In spite of the intense competition between all the athletes, the highlights went to the “usual suspects”, with the French, Portuguese and Spanish teams dominating the 29 heats that were put on today.
French bodyboarder Yon Aimar, competing in U18, got the two best waves (7.75 and 7.50) and the two best heat scores of the day (14.00 and 13.75), in 10 and 20 possible points, respectively. His compatriot Cornelius Accoh, in Longboard U-18, also stood out, with a wave of 7.5 and a total of 13.25.
Among the Spanish athletes, Teresa Padilla, Iago Formosel and Armide Soliveres were the highlights, with waves in the 7 points scale, while in the Portuguese team we had Filipa Broeiro, David Vedor, Pedro Ferreira and Joel Rodrigues as best athletes today.
“It was a very productive day, because we were able to complete everything we had
planned, in good conditions,” said Tiago Matos, technical director of the event. “Tomorrow we will put the remaining categories in the water, also with the first two rounds, so that we can be more comfortable during the rest of the week and wait for a bigger swell, scheduled for next weekend”. The Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018 will have another call tomorrow, at 8:30 a.m.
The Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018 is a collaboration between the European Surfing Federation, the Portuguese Surfing Federation, the Torres Vedras City Council and the Promotorres – Empresa Municipal, with main sponsorship from Noah Surfhouse Portugal, the support of Tecsport – Audi, MEO and Águas do Vimeiro, with Mega Hits as official radio and FUEL TV as official television.

Day Two
Shortboard surfing debuts in the competition
Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018 returned today to the water, with almost all the categories of the surfing discipline completing two rounds of the main event, in two feet waves, no wind, in an incredible beach day, to remember that, after all, it’s summer time.
Although the waves have dropped slightly compared to yesterday, forcing the organization to set up two different podiums, the surfing level has risen, again with the Portuguese, French and Spanish national team surfers standing out.
But other nations followed, such as the Italian, Swedish, Polish, Irish and German, who succeeded to put some of their surfers into the third round of the main event, with good performances and high level surfing. Surfers like Matteo Calatri, Lenni Jensen or Max Michalewski are the example of this.
However, the best wave of the day was for Spanish Under-14 Kay Odroizola (8.5 out of 10 possible points) and the best overall score for French Under-18 Mathis Crozon (14.50 out of 20 possible points), one of the top European surfer of this year’s tour and winner of its first event, also staged in Portugal.
“My strategy was to attack right from the beginning of the heat, to be comfortable and to be able to wait for bigger waves, eventually. But today there are no big differences between the set waves and those that come between them, so I ended up doing my score with the first two waves. I feel good and I’m confident,“ said Crozon at the water’s edge.
Among the Portuguese team, João Maria Mendonça in Under-14 and Afonso Antunes and Guilherme Ribeiro, in Under-16, are already in the third round of their respective categories, with performances above average.
Curiously, these three athletes are children of well known surfers, almost all successful competitors, a trend of this Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018. Also the Frenchmen Sam Piter, Uahina Joly and Ethan Capdeville, the Spanish brothers Iker and Adur Amatriain or his compatriot Sean Gunning, as well as the Portuguese Francisca Veselko, are part of this second generation of competitive families of European surfing.
“It ends up being natural! These kids grew up watching their parents compete and now that they fell in love with the same sport, they want to follow in their footsteps,“ commented Stephane Sisco, French surfing press officer and also a former European bodyboard champion.
Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018 will have another call tomorrow, with the check-in at 8am, at Mirante Beach. This will be the first day that the Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018 will definitely eliminate athletes from the competition, since in these contests all athletes have “two lives” – one in the main event and another one in the repercharge.

Day Three
Full day of repercharge rounds
Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018 had anentirelyday dedicated to the first repercharge rounds on all the categories, carried out in 2 feet waves, atMirante Beach.
Using only the northern podium of the event, in the early morning and mid to late afternoon (after a forced break in the absence of waves during the high tide), Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018 saw the elimination of its first athletes, from less experienced nations of European surfing.
The Netherlands, Belgium, Wales, Scotland, Italy, Russia, Ireland and even England are among the countries that today are no longer able to count on all their athletes to enable them to fight for the teams’ title.
As for the countries that usually compete for the European title – Portugal, France and Spain – today was a lay day, since all their athletes are still in the main event.
“It was a tough day, due to the four-hour stop during the high tide and the small waves we had today, but we ended up going a bit further with the event. The good news is that from Thursday on we will have a new swell, which will help to increase the show in the final rounds,“commented Tiago Matos, Technical Director of the event.
Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018 will have another call tomorrow, with the check-in scheduled for 7:30 a.m., at Mirante Beach.

Day Four
Short day with a few surprises
Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018 had a short day today, with only 18 heats, from the second round of the main event in Surfing Under-18 Boys to the second roundof the Surfing Under-16, Surfing Under-18 Boys, Surfing Under-14 and Girls Bodyboarding Under-18 repercharge.
Once again the organization had to stop the contest during the high tide due to lack of waves, which forced the teams to start early and finish late, in what has been a trend these last days.
The main surprises of the day happened early in the morning, in the Surfing Under-18 Boys main event, with Portugal’s Salvador Couto and Spaniard Yael Pena going to therepercharge rounds. Both redeemed themselveslater, having won their heats and so keeping their teams intact, both leading this competition alongside France.
A highlight for Pole Max Michalewski and Belgian Dean Vandewalle, who have also won their heats in this round, as well as their respective heats in the Under-16 category, where they also compete.
The best athlete of the day was again Frenchman Mathis Crozon in Surfing Under-18 Boys, who got a score of 13.27 points out of a possible20, taking himself as one of the favourites to win this event.
Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018 will have another call tomorrow, with the check-in scheduled again at 07:30 in the morning, at Mirante Beach. The day will be totally dedicated to the repercharge rounds, in all categories.

Day Five
New swell thrills teams and organization
As planned, Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018 got a new swell today, which delighted athletes and organizers at Mirante Beach in Santa Cruz. These waves that reached the Portuguese coast today brought more energy to the European surfing championship, which energized the competitors of the 17 nations and helped to increase the show in the third round of the reperchargein all categories.
The waves, which aren’t yet big enough to continue the contest during the high tide, but which have already allowed the use of double podium, were nevertheless much better than those of the last two days.
“We have more than two-thirds of the event already held and reality has confirmed the forecast fortunately,” said Tiago Matos, technical director of Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018. “From tomorrow on we enter the decisive stages of the contest, which will pave the way for the decision of the titles. We will have good conditions, which is what we wanted to finish this European championship, “concluded.
For now, the French team has an advantage, with all its athletes still in the main event. Portugal, who also hasn’t lost athletes, but who already has some in the repercharge rounds, remains in the fight, followed by Spain, who today lost it’s first athlete in the Longboarding discipline.
Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018 will have another call tomorrow, with the check-in scheduled again at 07:30 in the morning, at Mirante Beach.

Day Six
Portuguese bodyboarder Filipa Broeiro becomes European champion
Portuguese bodyboarder Filipa Broeiro turned European champion today at the Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018, beating the rest of the field by a large margin and assuming herself as a great hope of bodyboarding in the European context.
In the big final (the only one held today), surfed in good 3 to 5 feet waves, Filipa got a 14.67 total (the highest total bodyboarding had so far!), leaving French Mathie Goujon in second place with 5.64 points, Spanish Teresa Padilla in third place with 4.40 points and Gabrielle Taylor, from Channel Islands, in fourth place with 2.43 points.
“I’m very happy with this result, obviously. It couldn’t have been better, but it’s a great mix of emotions! It was a good final, where I waited a while for the best waves, but I ended up getting my best wave of the whole event and won! Thanks to the whole team and good luck to my colleagues in the remaining categories. We are confident!” said a smiling Filipa.
This was the only anticipated final of Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018, due to the start of a European Women’s Tour event, tomorrow, at Ílhavo, north Portugal, previously scheduled.
But in the other categories there was also excitement and spectacle. Portugal’s Martim Nunes and Spaniard Kay Odroizola relegated French Under-14 surfer Noa Dupouy to the reperchage rounds. Not satisfied, in the fourth round of the repercharge, Noa showed why he has been one of the biggest highlights of this year’s European Junior Tour and scored the best wave and the highest score of this event so far, respectively 9.60 and 17.43, in 10 and 20 possible points.
Similar attitude had the Portuguese bodyboarder Pedro Ferreira, in Under-16. Also relegated to the repercharge rounds by compatriot Joel Rodrigues and Spanish Armide Soliveres, in the fourth round Pedro gave a show and got the second best wave and the second highest combined score of the event, respectively 8.5 and 15.67 points.
The European team title dispute continues to be discussed among Spain, Portugal and France, a nation that has suffered its first casualties today, with the elimination of Mathis Crozon in Surfing Under-18, but also of Sam Piter in Surfing Under-16, two of the best surfers in their respective categories.
Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018 will have another call tomorrow, again at 07:30 AM, at Mirante Beach.
“With this new swell, we have good conditions to finish everything in beautiful waves on Sunday, with the seven big finals. So, tomorrow will be a day where we’ll close the main event and repercharge rounds in all categories, having a better notion of who’s going to really battle for the European team title, “said Tiago Matos, technical director.

Day Seven
Tension increases as competition gets to final stages
Today was a decisive day at the Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018. With good waves of 3 to 5 feet, sunshine and a lot of public on the beach, the best juniors in Europe have gotten to the final rounds of their categories for the much-desired places in the big finals, which will assign individual and teams European titles.
With the competition on the rise, tension between the European surfing title candidates has come to the fore, with some peculiar events between athletes and some more vigorous paddling, nothing unusual in championships of this level.
At this moment, and when there are only the big finals of the remaining categories (with the exception of the Under-18 Women’s Bodyboarding, held yesterday and won by Portuguese Filipa Broeiro), besides the repercharge final in Men’s U-18 Surfing, Portugal has 11 athletes still in competition, while Spain and France managed to put 8 athletes each on those same heats, with the Spanish team still having potential for a ninth finalist.
“Everything will be decided tomorrow, in the big finals,” said Tiago Matos, Technical director. “The difference between the first three teams is short, so it will all go to the ones who keep their heads focused on the objective, as a team and also as an athlete. Good luck for all!”
The day was also marked by an incident with a family of dolphins, who came very close to the surf zone, escorting one of its elements, already dead, in the form of farewell. The episode was quickly understood by the Water Patrol in service to the event, experienced local surfer Sérgio Cosme, who along with a Bodysurfing national contest athlete, brought the dead dolphin to land, which was forwarded to the competent authorities.
Noah Eurosurf Junior 2018 will have its final call tomorrow, at 9AM, at Mirante Beach.
