The European Tour of BodyBoard (ETB) 2024 holds one of its events at El Socorro beach in September
The Canary Islands Surfing Federation organizes this event "in tandem" with the ETB Gran Canaria Pro
The sporting event scores points in three competitions, supported by the Los Realejos Town Hall, the Tenerife Island Council, and the Canary Islands Government
The European Tour of BodyBoard (ETB) 2024 will hold one of its events from September 26 to 29 at El Socorro beach, in Los Realejos. The event is organized by the Canary Islands Surfing Federation under the brand Socorro Classic, which promotes the sporting activities held at the beach in this northern Tenerife town. This is an official event and qualifies for the European Tour of BodyBoard, as well as the 100% BodyBoard League of the Spanish Surfing Federation, and the Canary Islands BodyBoard Circuit, run by the aforementioned Canary Federation.
This ETB event, organized by the European Surfing Federation at El Socorro, is the second to be held in the Canary Islands this year as part of the European championship, and follows the one that will take place in Las Palmas a few days prior. It is also the second milestone of the European BodyBoard Championship to be held at El Socorro beach, following the Canary Federation’s organization of the first international event there in 2008 for the ETB.
With the ETB 2024 taking place at El Socorro shortly after the scheduled event in Las Palmas, the Canary Islands Surfing Federation aims to "create a mirror initiative, allowing athletes to participate in both events in the Canary Islands with just one trip to the archipelago and an internal transfer between Gran Canaria and Tenerife. In this way, we also reduce the carbon footprint and position the Canary Islands as a destination for sustainable and conscious sports tourism, respecting and balancing the relationship between sport and nature," explains the vice president of the Canary Islands Surfing Federation, Adrián García.
Participation and Registration
The sporting event is open to athletes from around the world, who are invited to compete in the water in the categories of Open, Women, Junior, and Dropknee. Those interested in participating can apply online via the registration platform on the website http://www.socorroclassic.com/.
To participate in the ETB 2024 El Socorro, it is mandatory to have a national, European, or international federated license, or one recognized by the International Surfing Association (ISA). Athletes can sign up for as many categories as they wish, but once the brackets are filled, registration will close. The event is limited to a maximum of 120 participants, although the promoting federation reserves the right to expand this number.
The competition operates with a system of qualifying heats of four athletes, with the top two advancing to the next round. The approximate duration of each heat is between 20 and 45 minutes, at the discretion of the staff. Across all categories, the total prize money reaches 6,000 euros. Apart from the Junior category (for athletes under 18 as of December 31, 2024), all other categories are open to all ages. Aside from the dropknee category (riding with one knee on the board), all other competitions are in the prone bodyboarding style (lying down on the board).
El Socorro beach in Los Realejos is a traditional spot for surfing and bodyboarding. Its exposure to the North Atlantic and its ability to receive swells from the west, north, and east make this beach a prime location for water sports.
ETB 2024 El Socorro is conceived as a live sporting event that will be complemented by parallel cultural and leisure activities, with a program to be detailed by the organization in the lead-up to the event. The Tenerife event is organized by the Canary Islands Surfing Federation, with the support of the European Surfing Federation and the Spanish Surfing Federation. It is backed by the Los Realejos Town Hall, sponsored by the Tenerife Island Council through its public company Ideco, and the Directorate-General of Physical Activity and Sports of the Canary Islands Government, as well as several private sponsors.
